For some 16 –18 cowboys to look after 20,000 head of cattle requires horses — good ones. The ranch raises their own Quarter horses and each cowboy has a string of around 10 head. Presently the Ranch maintains about 300, which includes three stallions and 30 broodmares. In 2004, Douglas Lake Ranch was awarded the AQHA Best Remuda Award.
