When the postponement of the Richard Cosgrave Badlands Dinosaur Derby in Drumheller gave the professional chuckwagon drivers an unscheduled weekend off, the WPCA Dodge Pro Tour resumed at Guy Weadick Days in High River for the running of the North American Chuckwagon Championship.
The dust was flying under sunny skies and a beautiful 19°C, and when the night wrapped up, 1981 North American Chuckwagon Champion Kirk Sutherland opened up the show with the fast time of the night. Coming off barrel number 1 in heat number 5, Sutherland, driving the EMCO Corporation outfit posted a time of 1:16.95 and placed first overall for the day by a mere 2 one-hundreds of a second over Troy Dorchester who placed second on the night. Colt Cosgrave, Chad Harden and Layne MacGillivray rounded out the top five on the night.
The driver posting the best 4-day aggregate time after Sunday’s run will be declared the champion of the 2011 North American Chuckwagon Championship. Day 2 of the North American Chuckwagon Championship from High River can be heard live on Friday , June 23 at 7:45pm on Classic Country AM1060 out of Calgary, 890AM CJDC out of Dawson Creek and 99.7 FM The Wolf out of Bonnyville.
